Arewa Youths for Peace and Security has called for increased transparency in the ongoing investigation of a high-profile criminal case in Osun State.
The group’s intervention came in the wake of controversial allegations made against a serving member of the House of Representatives.
A security analyst and director of the Security Salute Nigeria Initiative, Salihu Dantata Mahmud, raised concerns about the integrity of the investigation.
Mahmud questioned the reliability of a confession made by one of the suspects arrested in connection with a series of abductions and killings in Ilesha, Osun State.
“Sometimes these confessional statements are made by suspects under duress or to secure a more lenient treatment,” Mahmud stated.
He claimed that his own secret investigation revealed discrepancies between the suspect’s original statement in Yoruba and the version released by the police.
Mahmud suggested the possibility of opposition interference in the investigation.
“I just hope one opposition member is not somewhere writing the script for the police,” he remarked.
In light of these concerns, the Arewa youth group has called for the Inspector General of Police to take over the case to ensure a fair and transparent investigation.
