Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt.-Gen. Olufemi Oluyede, has reaffirmed the commitment of the Nigerian Army to end Boko Haram insurgency in Borno and parts of the North-East.

He lauded El-Kanemi for his unwavering support to the army, and his role in mobilising residents of the state against insurgency.

“Your Highness, I am here to pay homage to you as our father and to thank you for the role you have played in supporting the military over the years,” he said.
Oluyede stressed the need for collective efforts towards addressing insurgency, noting that kinetic approach alone would not be suffice.
“We cannot achieve peace in Borno without the support of our fathers and the good people of the state. All hands must be on deck to end this menace, and restore economic activities and normalcy in the region,” Olujede said.

He recounted that Borno was once a peaceful destination he frequently visited during his younger days, adding that insecurity must be addressed to reclaim era of peace and prosperity.

The army chief assured that Operation Hadin Kai (OPHK), which has been instrumental in combating insurgency would be intensified to achieve lasting peace.

Responding, El-Kanemi commended the army for its sacrifices and resilience in the fight against terrorism.
He pledged continued support of the traditional institutions in fostering unity and mobilising support to the military.

El-Kanemi, who highlited the enduring legacy of Kanem Borno dynasty that thrived for over 1,500 years in spite of challenges, said the region has historical reputation for peace and hospitality.

The royal father said that the past disruptions, including Boko Haram insurgency and Maitatsine disturbances were perpetrated by external influences disguised as settlers.

He, therefore, called for unity, vigilance and collective efforts to address security challenges, adding that, “Borno’s history demonstrates strength and resilience of its people in overcoming adversity”.
