20th Century Studios has hired filmmaker Christopher McQuarrie to write and direct the threequel to the 80s classic film ‘Conan the Barbarian’.
The studio has also tapped actor Arnold Schwaznegger to reprise his role as the titular character and protagonist Conan in the new feature film titled ‘King Conan’.
Speaking of the plot, Schwarzenegger said, “It’s a great story where Conan has been King for 40 years, got complacent, and is forced to get out of the kingdom, slowly. Then there’s conflict, of course, he returns, and there’s all kinds of madness and violence and magic and creatures. Of course, you’d have all the special effects; the studio system has plenty of money to make those movies really big. So I’m looking forward to all of those projects.”
Hollywood has long sought to bring Schwarzenegger back to his Conan role, taking steps to make it age-appropriate. Universal had the rights to the character in the early 2010s, with ‘Fast and Furious’ writer Chris Morgan placing Schwarzenegger’s Conan in an Unforgiven-style story. Despite years of development, it was never made.
On the other hand, 20th Century has spent much of 2025 trying to secure the rights to the character to move forward with the feature.
