Abia State government has directed the security agencies to enforce law and order in Arochukwu following a report of planned protests over an ezeship tussle in the town.
The state commissioner for information, Okey Kanu, stated this yesterday in a statement made available to journalists in Umuahia, the state capital.
The statement accused “some unscrupulous individuals who have been masquerading themselves as traditional rulers in the town to disrupt its peace and tranquillity” of being behind the plot.
It said: “Planners of the protests want to use thugs and drug addicts to intimidate and harass innocent citizens in the town under the guise of a non-existing chieftaincy tussle.
“Government wishes to warn those involved in this unwholesome plan and their sponsors to desist from these despicable acts in their best interest.”
Therefore, it urged the agencies to bring the planners to book accordingly and restated the government’s commitment to protecting the residents’ lives and property.
