The Abdul Samad Rabiu Africa Initiative (ASR Africa) has officially opened a state-of-the-art sports complex at the University of Jos, valued at N270 million, as part of its Tertiary Education Grant Scheme.
The Abdul Samad Rabiu Sports Complex, situated on the university’s Naraguta Campus, was unveiled on Wednesday. The facility features a 250-seat spectator stand, lawn tennis and basketball courts, changing rooms, and restrooms. It will also serve as one of the venues for the upcoming Nigeria University Games (NUGA), which the university is set to host this month.

During the commissioning ceremony, the Plateau State Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Hon. Musa Ibrahim Ashoms, praised ASR Africa’s Chairman, Abdul Samad Rabiu, for what he described as a “noble and enduring contribution” to sports and education in the state. He highlighted that the project would significantly enhance sports development, recreation, and overall learning for students.

The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Jos, Prof. Tanko Ishaya, expressed profound gratitude to Rabiu for his generous donation, describing the facility as a legacy project that aligns with the university’s vision of becoming a premier sports hub. “Until today, the University of Jos had not benefitted from a project linked to a passionate philanthropist. Now, with the Abdul Samad Rabiu Sports Complex, we are making strides towards that goal,” he stated.

Dr. Ubon Udoh, Managing Director and CEO of ASR Africa, remarked that the project exemplifies the organisation’s commitment to providing sustainable and indigenous solutions through investments in education, health, and social development across Nigeria. “It is heartening to not only witness the inception of this project but also to be present for its commissioning,” he said.

Representing the Plateau State Governor, Barr. Caleb Mutfwang, Deputy Governor Mrs. Josephine Piyo applauded the initiative, asserting that the facility would act as “a breeding ground where talents will be discovered and dreams realised.” She added that the donation comes at an opportune moment, particularly as the university prepares to host the 2025 NUGA Games.

The commissioning ceremony was attended by NUGA officials, government representatives, and members of the university management.
