The Paediatric Association of Nigeria (PAN) has expressed its commitment to tackle malnutrition and safeguard the lives and health of the Nigerian child.

The association’s president, Dr Ekanem Ekure, made the commitment yesterday while addressing a press conference on their 56th Annual General Meeting and Scientific Conference, which is scheduled to commence from January 22nd to 24th in Gombe State.

She said the association is determined to safeguard the lives of Nigerian children by promoting vaccination delivery at hospitals and providing care services to them.

According to her, despite the numerous challenges, there have been significant improvements in child health in Nigeria revealing that under-five mortality rate has declined from 132 per 1000 live births in 2018 to 110 per 1000 live births in 2023.

“Similarly, the infant mortality rate has decreased from 67 per 1000 live births in 2018 to 63 per 1000 live births in 2023.

“However, more needs to be done to address the persisting issues of malnutrition, vaccine hesitancy, and inadequate healthcare services. Improving vaccine coverage rates, particularly among children in hard-to-reach areas, is a key area of focus by this association.

“Additionally, addressing malnutrition, which is a major contributor to child mortality in Nigeria, is crucial. Enhancing healthcare services, including increasing access to skilled birth attendance and emergency care, is also essential,” she stated.

The association’s president explained that the conference provides a platform for stakeholders to share knowledge, experiences, and best practices in addressing the unique challenges faced by Nigerian children.
