The indefinite strike embarked upon by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) at Moses Orshio Adasu University, Makurdi (MOAUM), formerly Benue State University (BSU), over unresolved welfare and other issues has grounded academic activities at the school.

The strike which began on June 1, 2026, halted academic activities on both campuses yesterday as students just finished their first semester examinations.

The postgraduate students were yet to commence their examinations when the industrial action was declared by ASUU to press home its demands.

A postgraduate student who identified himself as Fanen Moses urged the visitor of the university and governor of Benue State, Hyacinth Alia, the university management led by the vice chancellor, Prof. Timothy Terseer Alabar and ASUU officials to amicably resolve the issues to avoid prolonged stay of students at home, “I am yet to start my examinations. As students we are calling on governor Alia, Vice Chancellor, Prof.Alabar and ASUU leadership to resolve this strike issue. Academic calendar should not be affected,” he advised.

Some students who went to the university campuses were seen returning home as many lecturers’ offices were locked in compliance with the strike.

However, the non-academic staff members have continued working as they were not part of the ASUU industrial action.

Recall that, the Academic Staff Union of Universities, Benue State University chapter (ASUU-BSU), had announced the commencement of the indefinite and comprehensive strike.

ASUU said the decision was reached during the union’s congress meeting held on June 1, 2026.

According to the strike notice addressed to the Vice-Chancellor of Benue State University, (Rev. Fr. Moses Orshio Adasu University), the action received the approval of the National Executive Council (NEC) of the union after extensive deliberations on lingering welfare concerns.

ASUU-BSU stated that the strike became necessary due to the failure of the university authorities to satisfactorily address several welfare-related matters despite repeated engagements, representations and assurances.

The union expressed concern over what it described as the continued neglect of these issues and the negative impact they have had on the welfare, morale and productivity of its members.

The congress consequently resolved that all members of the union should withdraw their services with immediate effect.

The notice which was jointly signed by the chairperson of ASUU-BSU, Comrade Ali Sule Ako, and the secretary, Comrade Daniel N. Chile, said the industrial action, will remain in force until substantial progress was made toward resolving the outstanding welfare concerns and other matters in dispute.
