Former vice president Atiku Abubakar and ex-Rivers State governor Rotimi Amaechi, were among top political leaders who visited former Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai at his Abuja residence on Saturday, following the death of his mother, Hajiya Umma El-Rufai, and his recent release from ICPC custody.
The late matriarch passed away on Friday in Cairo, Egypt, after a period of illness. El-Rufai had been detained since February 18 over allegations of financial misconduct but was temporarily released on compassionate grounds to attend his mother’s burial.
Amaechi, speaking in a video shared by the African Democratic Congress, described the charges against El-Rufai as politically motivated, saying the government granted his release without a court order.
Also present were former Sokoto State governor Aminu Tambuwal, former Attorney General of the Federation Abubakar Malami, family, friends, and other dignitaries who came to console the former governor.
