Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has expressed deep concern over a series of deadly attacks in Adamawa State that reportedly claimed more than 20 lives in recent days.

The incidents, which occurred in Madagali and Hong Local Government Areas of the State, have once again highlighted the persistent security challenges confronting Nigeria’s North-East region.

Atiku, a former presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), made his reaction known on his verified X account on Friday, lamenting both the human toll of the violence and its broader implications for regional stability.

“I am deeply moved by the tragic attacks in Adamawa State, where gunmen killed over 20 people in a market in Madagali and Hong local government areas,” he wrote.

Highlighting the wider impact, he added that the attacks underscored the worsening insecurity across the country and further deepened the North-East crisis.

He urged authorities to take decisive action, calling on them to redouble efforts to address the menace, ensure that perpetrators are brought to justice, and strengthen security architecture to prevent future occurrences.

Adamawa has long remained a frontline state in Nigeria’s fight against insurgency, with authorities struggling to contain assaults targeting civilians, markets and schools. Over the years, the North-East has witnessed repeated attacks that have disrupted economic activities and displaced thousands of residents.

Madagali and Hong, like several other communities in the state, have been vulnerable to raids over the past decade, largely linked to the activities of Boko Haram and splinter groups exploiting porous borders and limited security infrastructure.

The latest attacks, reportedly carried out by unidentified gunmen, have drawn national attention as the region continues to grapple with insurgency and banditry-related violence.

Security experts warned that without sustained interventions, attacks on civilians in markets and rural communities could escalate further, compounding the humanitarian and security challenges facing Adamawa and neighbouring states in the North-East.
