Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA), Abuja Chapter, has hosted its August Reading/Writers’ Dialogue at the Mamman Vatsa Writers’ Village, Mpape, Abuja, at the weekend. The event celebrated theatre, poetry, and Mallam Denja Abdullahi’s literary journey.

The event, which coincided with the 56th birthday of Abdullahi, renowned poet and author of “Chants in the Cemetery”, featured a stage play adaptation of his work, panel discussions, poetry contests, and the presentation of certificates of literacy excellence.

The president of the association, Dr. Usman Oladipo Akanbi, led members, scholars, and guests in honouring Abdullahi, describing him as “a rare voice in contemporary Nigerian literature whose works continue to inspire both emerging and established writers.”

Panelists, including Prof. Tunde Olusunle, Prof. Mabel Evwierhoma, and Oko Owi Ocho Afrika, explored the intersections of theatre and poetry while highlighting Abdullahi’s contributions to the literary landscape.

Students also participated in open mic sessions and poetry competitions, adding vibrancy to the gathering.

In his remarks, Abdullahi expressed gratitude to ANA and the literary community, urging young writers to remain consistent in their craft and use their voices as instruments of change. “Writing is both a gift and a responsibility,” he said, encouraging emerging writers to keep pushing boundaries while reminding seasoned authors of their duty to guide the next generation.
