The National Automotive Design and Development Council (NADDC) is set to partner local automotive spare parts vendors to produce approximately 15,000 components for a vehicle.

Nigeria’s automobile regulator disclosed this information at the 2024 Auto Expo put together by BGK Exhibitions Ltd., noting that the auto parts industry is a significant employer of labour, contributing to our national economic development.

Speaking at the auto fair, the director general, NADDC, Joseph Osanipin, who was represented by the Zonal coordinator, Southwest, NADDC, Dr Segun Omisore said, the Nigerian automotive industry is on a promising trajectory, and as such, a strong, vibrant auto parts sector is essential for its continued growth and success.

Saying that NADDC recognised the critical role stakeholders in this industry play, Osanipin stressed that robust auto parts industry ensures the availability of affordable and high-quality spare parts as this reduces vehicle downtime and keeps Nigeria moving.

“As we know, a vehicle has about 30,000 parts. If you manufacture one vehicle today, you use about 60,000 parts. But I want to assure everyone that if we can manufacture 15,000 parts alone in Nigeria, it will go a long way towards our economy, and that is why the government is working hard to try to partner with the informal sector to produce as many as 15,000 spare parts in the country, as this will add to the economy of Nigeria and provide employment for the people.

“We have a testing centre in Nigeria where we determine the quality of parts. As time goes on, all these parts will have numbers that will determine the quality of the parts to avoid parts that are not good enough,” the DG pointed out.

Osanipin also expressed appreciation for the auto expo organiser, auto parts dealers, and all stakeholders working closely to create a conducive environment for the industry to flourish.
