Awujeje FC have emerged champions of the maiden edition of the Oganenigu Unity Cup after thrashing Agbada Community FC 3-0 in the final.
The final match of the community based tournament decided at the Oganenigu headquarter Aloko saw giant killer Awujeje dominated the encounter from the blast of the whistle to the end with their fair play tiki-taka tactics that kept the spectators thrilled throughout on their seat.
Before the final, OJuwo FC defeated surprised package of the tournament OGANE- UGE 3-0 in the third place match to win bronze medals.
The chairman of the organizing committee and a retired FIFA badge referee, Mr Abel Baba, explained that the competition was created to positively engage the youth and boost football development in Oganenigu community.
He said tournament creates a platform that allows young people to showcase their talents while also deepening unity among members of the community.
“As a son of the soil and a professional referee, we are committed to championing youth and community development through football,” Baba said.
On his part, Dr Iyeh Bamayi, who was the special guest at the final, commended the organisers for instituting the tournament as a means of promoting peace and unity in the community.
“Indeed, this competition is laudable. I am deeply honoured to be part of this initiative that is aimed at promoting youth and sports development in the community and Nigeria in general.
“I commend the organisers and urge them to keep it up as it offers bright hope for talents that we have seen in the competition,” Bamayi stated.
The convener Honorable Muhammed Ibrahim commended all the participants for the success of the three weeks tournament, saying budding talents discovered will be groomed to form Oganenigu United Football Academy.
“I would like to commend all the teams that have participated in this competition for their fair play and show of soccer artistry displayed throughout. I am also pleased with both the technical committee and the scouts that have been around and were able to identify some budding underage potentials which will form Oganenigu United football academy.
Special adviser to Kogi State governor on mentoring and a son of the soil, Hon Umar Isah Edibo who was physically present, describe the tournament as a unify factor that will connect communities within Oganenigu and brings the youths to the lime light in their football careers as he promised to ensure that the next edition get international recognition.
