To check further building collapse, the Lagos State government has begun the removal of illegal structures in Banana Island.
The state government’s action followed the recent collapse of a seven-storey building in the highbrow area.
The demolition of the illegal structures is being carried out by officials of the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) and the Lagos State Environmental and Special Offences Unit (Task Force).
The affected buildings on Banana Island, according to the state government, contravene Lagos State Urban and Regional Planning Development Law (2019).
In a statement yesterday, the state government said the exercise was in compliance with Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s directive last weekend when he visited the site of the seven-storey building that collapsed on Banana Island.
Governor Sanwo-Olu had said the site of the collapsed building was not originally part of the Island’s plan. The demolition team was led by the general manager of LASBCA, Mr. Gbolahan Oki and the Task Force chairman, CSP Shola Jejeloye.
