Bandits have launched an attack on the Moriki community in Zamfara State, abducting over ten residents and demanding a ransom of N50 million.
ASP Yazid Abubakar, the Police spokesperson in Zamfara, confirmed the incident and stated that the Commissioner of Police had instructed operatives to take action to rescue the kidnapped individuals.
A resident shared with the BBC Hausa Service on Thursday that the bandits had been a persistent threat to the community, having previously kidnapped other residents as well.
“The bandits alleged that the local commander killed their cattle. They invaded our homes, taking people one by one, and set a deadline for today to pay the N50 million,” he reported.
He further explained that the bandits frequently resorted to kidnapping whenever they sought money, holding victims captive until a ransom was paid.
“Recently, they extorted N20 million from the community to allow locals to access their farms. The safety of our community is severely compromised,” he added.
