Armed bandits on Sunday night invaded Yashikira community in Baruten Local Government Area of Kwara State, abducting 10 residents in a coordinated attack that also targeted the Emir’s palace and nearby police facilities.
Sources said the attackers stormed the community under the cover of darkness and initially moved toward the palace of the Emir of Yashikira as well as local police formations before they were engaged by security operatives.
It was gathered that the swift response of security personnel helped repel the assailants from reaching some of their intended targets.
A senior security officer, who confirmed the incident to LEADERSHIP, said a joint team of military and police operatives had launched an immediate rescue operation to secure the release of the abducted victims.
“Security forces have launched immediate rescue operations to free victims of Yashikira abduction which occurred on Sunday night,” the officer said.
He added that troops had already cordoned off the area as part of efforts to track down the attackers and ensure the safe return of the abductees.
“Military and police operatives have established a cordon in the area as part of the efforts to rescue about 10 persons who were reportedly taken from the community in an overnight attack on the palace of the Emir of Yashikira,” he said.
The officer further disclosed that the attackers also attempted to raid local police stations but were repelled by security operatives on ground.
According to him, the police are expected to issue an official statement on the incident as investigations and rescue operations continue in the area.
