Referee Omar Artan touched down in Mogadishu on Wednesday, making a triumphant return to Somalia after being barred from entering the United States for the 2026 World Cup.

The 34-year-old official, named Africa’s Referee of the Year in 2025, arrived at Aden Adde International Airport to a hero’s welcome. Government officials, Somali Football Federation representatives, fellow referees, and local residents gathered to greet him.

Just days earlier, Artan had been denied entry at Miami International Airport despite holding a diplomatic passport and valid U.S. visa. Immigration authorities have provided no official explanation, though Somalia remains on a travel ban list enacted by former President Donald Trump.

Following an 11-hour immigration interview and several hours in detention, Artan was placed on a flight to Istanbul before finally returning home.

“The encouragement I received here—I know I’ll get more support,” Artan told reporters, speaking through a BBC translator. “Everything is pre-destined. FIFA supported me well and stayed in touch until I reached Mogadishu.”

Despite the setback, Artan made a bold promise: “I will officiate at the next World Cup. Somalia, everywhere—I’m letting you know.”

Addressing his nation’s youth, Artan urged resilience. “Don’t be demoralized about your country. Despite what happened to me, I still stand for my nation. That flag is ours, and so is the passport—let’s defend it.”

Hundreds gathered at the airport, some carrying banners and wearing hats bearing Artan’s image.

The referee is scheduled to appear at Mogadishu Stadium later Wednesday to watch a match between Heegan and Dekadaha—where thousands more are expected to celebrate their returning hero.
