Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State has launched the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Celebration Appeal Week and called on philanthropists and other well-meaning individuals to contribute generously towards the success of the annual event.
The event took place yesterday at the Government House, Bauchi, where donations totalling over N12 million were announced on behalf of the three arms of government and other key stakeholders in the state.
Through his deputy, Rt. Hon. Mohammed Auwal Jatau, the governor said the contributions to the Nigerian Legion Fund serve as a mark of appreciation and support for gallant Nigerians who paid the ultimate price in the defence of the country’s unity and sovereignty.
He said the annual observance of the Armed Forces Remembrance Celebration reflects the commitment of both the federal and state governments to recognise the sacrifices of patriotic servicemen and women who endured hardships, particularly during the two World Wars and the Nigerian Civil War.
“These brave men and women gave their comfort and, in many cases, their lives to safeguard the territorial integrity and continued existence of our nation as one indivisible entity. They have truly paid their dues to Nigeria,” he said.
Governor Mohammed expressed concern that the sacrifices of ex-servicemen were gradually being forgotten, stressing that the government alone could not shoulder the responsibility of catering to members of the Nigerian Legion and their families.
He said that the state government remains committed to the welfare of legionnaires through employment opportunities in ministries, departments and agencies (NDAs), as well as poverty alleviation programmes and other palliative measures.
In his remarks, the chairman of the Nigerian Legion in Bauchi State, Garba Itas, commended Mohammed’s administration for its sustained support to legionnaires.
He pledged the Legion’s continued cooperation with the government in promoting peace and security across the state.
