Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State has approved the immediate suspension of the production of Unified Business Identification Cards across the state.
This was contained in a statement issued by the senior special assistant to the governor on Internal Security, Babayo Liman, made available to newsmen yesterday in Bauchi.
According to the statement, the decision followed the discovery that some individuals were allegedly producing and distributing counterfeit identification cards to extort traders and business owners.
Liman explained that the Unified Business Identification Card initiative was originally introduced by the state government to strengthen internal security across Bauchi State.
He, however, revealed that investigations uncovered the activities of some fraudulent persons who were issuing fake ID cards and collecting N3,000 from traders and business owners under the false claim of acting on behalf of the Bauchi State Government and the Department of Internal Security.
He noted that the illegal activities pose a serious threat to public peace and security in the state.
“In response, the state governor has approved an immediate halt to the production of the ID Cards pending through review and investigation. These exercises will now be conducted by the Ministry of Internal Security and Home Affairs, Bauchi State,” the statement read.
Liman further urged members of the public to report anyone found extorting traders or business owners, adding that such persons should be arrested and handed over to the police for prosecution.
