The Bauchi State government has approved the decision of the Bauchi Emirate Council’s Committee on Sallah Durbar to postpone the 2025 much-anticipated Durbar Festival to mark this year’s Eid-el-Fitr.

This was disclosed in a press statement issued on Friday by the media aide to the Bauchi State governor, Mukhtar Gidado, who clarified that the decision was an internal resolution made by the Emirate Council without prior consultation with the state government.

Recall that the Sallah Durbar Festival is a longstanding pillar of Bauchi’s rich cultural heritage, bringing together the people of Bauchi Emirate, visitors, and tourists from across Nigeria and beyond.

It also serves as a symbol of unity, history, and identity, fostering communal pride while contributing significantly to the state’s social and economic vibrancy.

The statement further emphasised that, “In recognition of its significance, the Bauchi State Government had made extensive security and logistical preparations to ensure a seamless and successful celebration.

“Nonetheless, out of profound respect for the traditional institution and its leadership, His Excellency, Senator Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed, the Executive Governor of Bauchi State, has reluctantly approved the Emirate Council’s request for postponement.”

He noted that while the State government regretted the lack of prior engagement on such a major decision, it remained committed to working harmoniously with the Emirate Council to uphold and preserve Bauchi’s cherished traditions.

The Bauchi State government also expressed regret for any inconvenience the last-minute postponement may have caused the peace-loving residents of Bauchi Emirate and the esteemed guests who had planned to witness the grand event.

Gidado assured that the government will take necessary steps to prevent such abrupt changes in the future, particularly on matters of cultural significance that impact both the people and the state’s image.

“Despite this development, His Excellency extends his heartfelt Sallah greetings to His Royal Highness, the Emir of Bauchi, the Bauchi Emirate Council, and the entire people of Bauchi State.

“The government wishes all a joyous and peaceful Sallah celebration in advance,” the statement concluded.
