Bauchi government has targeted about 540 dogs for rabies vaccine to prevent dogs in the state from contracting the zoonotic viral disease affecting the central nervous system of unvaccinated dogs.
In 2024, over 200 cases of dog bites were reported in some local government areas of Bauchi, which led to the death of several people.

Similarly, Bauchi billed over one million heads of cattle and 500,000 sheep for vaccines against common livestock related diseases.

Speaking at the 2025 Livestock Vaccination Campaign’s flag-off in Itas, Governor Bala Mohammed argued that the government should vaccinate dogs, citing the recent outbreak of rabies in the state.
To combat the spread of rabies, the governor said rabies vaccines have been procured for administration on dogs across the 20 local government areas of the state.

He urged dog owners to take their animals to the nearest veterinary hospital for vaccination at no cost.
Governor Mohammed claimed that over 100 veterinary officers and livestock extension agents have been trained on disease monitoring and investigation.

He added that 100 personnel were trained on the use of global best practices in livestock production.
