Bauchi State government has inaugurated the State Land Use and Allocation Committee to advise the government on land administration, revenue generation and the regularisation of land titles.
The ceremony held at the Deputy Governor’s Conference Hall, Government House Bauchi yesterday, was presided over by the secretary to the state government (SSG), Alhaji Aminu Hammayo, who described the establishment of the committee as an action with significant legal implications.
Hammayo explained that the inauguration was not merely a procedural exercise but a constitutional requirement provided for under the Land Use Act of 1978 (CAP L5, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004), Section 2.
He charged members of the committee to serve as key advisers to the Governor on all matters relating to land management in the state.
According to him, the committee’s core responsibilities include addressing issues arising from land revocations, determining appropriate compensation for affected persons, identifying opportunities for the creation of new layouts, and enhancing the state’s internally generated revenue.
Responding on behalf of the committee, its chairman and state Commissioner for Lands and Survey, Alhaji Abdullahi Muhammad Gwaram, acknowledged the magnitude of the task ahead, describing the responsibility as enormous.
He, however, assured the state government and the people of Bauchi that the committee would work diligently to achieve its mandate.
Gwaram noted that although the state faces several challenges relating to land administration, the committee would work to address many of these issues.
He also appealed for the cooperation and understanding of the public, stressing that while the committee’s work is routine, it requires continuity and collective support to be effective.
In his welcome address, the secretary of the Committee, Alhaji Maijama’a Umar Mahmud, highlighted the objectives behind the establishment of the committee, reiterating the state government’s commitment to sanitising the land sector and transforming it into a catalyst for development in Bauchi State.
