Bauchi State High Court No. 9 has sentenced one Usman Abdullahi to death by hanging for the killing of Zaidu Adamu Kofar Dumi over a handset charger.
The presiding judge, Justice Sa’ad Muhammad Sambuwal in his judgement found the accused person guilty of causing grievous and culpable homicide contrary to sections 239 and 221 of the Penal Code.
Prosecution counsel, Barrister Abubakar Ahmed Kobi informed the court that one Adamu Mohammed Kofar Dumi reported at Police A Division that on 12th May 2021, the defendant had a misunderstanding with his son Zaidu Adamu and his friend called Ziya’u Abdulhadi over a handset charger where the defendant used knife and stabbed Zaidu in different parts of his body.
The act had caused grievous hurt to Zaidu who was rushed to the Specialist Hospital Bauchi, where a medical doctor certified him dead.
The trial of the accused persons started on 30th December 2021, and the prosecution counsel charged the defendant on two counts charges, causing grievous hurt and homicide, where he caused death with a knife when he stabbed the defendant with a knife in his stomach, neck and several parts of his body.
Counsel to the defendant Barrister Naziru Umar presented two witnesses and asked for leniency.
After the two parties closed their submissions and final written address, Justice Sambuwal, in his judgement, said, “I hereby convict Usman Sa’ad for the offence of culpable homicide punishable with death, which the neck will hang you till you die.”
According to the court, the penalty was contained in the provisions of section 221 of the Penal Code: “For the grievous hurt, you are sentenced to five years in the correctional service as per section 239 of the Penal Code.”
