Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State has ordered the immediate suspension of all commercial activities in 25 cattle markets across Bauchi, Tafawa Balewa, Kirfi, and Alkaleri local government areas, citing escalating security threats linked to criminal activities.

The governor who disclosed this in a statement signed by his spokesperson, Comrade Mukhtar Gidado, and made available to reporters in Bauchi on Thursday, said the decision was taken as part of efforts to curb rising insecurity associated with the operation of some cattle markets, have been exploited by suspected criminal elements.

The governor identified the affected cattle markets in Alkaleri Local Government Area, to include Alkaleri, Mansur, Futuk, Yalo, Gwana, Yalon Gurza, Kuka, Rimi, Pali, Bokwas, Kwaimawa, Mai-Ari, Gajin Duguri, and Maina Ma’aji.

Similarly, in Bauchi LGA, Liman Katagum market is closed. In Kirfi LGA, the suspension applies to Lariski, Bara, Sharfuri, Cheledi, and Boli, while in Tafawa Balewa LGA, the affected markets include Burga, Bununu, Ball, Kulumbo, and Zwall.

Governor Mohammed said the move was necessitated by intelligence reports indicating that the markets had become hubs for criminal operations, including cattle rustling, kidnapping for ransom, killings, and extortion.

He also expressed concern over allegations that the markets were being used to facilitate the exchange of weapons and illicit financial transactions.

“The markets, while in operation, had become tactical targets for criminals who steal livestock, terrorize traders, and disrupt food supply chains,” the statement noted, adding that the situation has resulted in significant economic losses and poses a threat to the livelihoods of local communities.

He described the suspension as a temporary measure, will remain in force until there is a “significant improvement” in the security situation.

Governor Mohammed said security agencies have been directed to enforce strict compliance with the order.

He added that local government councils and traditional authorities, including emirs, district heads, and village heads, have been tasked with sensitizing residents and ensuring effective monitoring of the directive.

The governor reaffirmed its commitment to restoring peace and safeguarding economic activities in the state, urging residents to cooperate with authorities during the enforcement period.
