The Bayelsa State Government has announced a three-day mourning period in honour of the late deputy governor of the State, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo.
Ewhrudjakpo passed away on Thursday, December 11, 2025, at the age of 60.
According to a statement on Friday by the State’s Commissioner for Information, Orientation and Strategy, Hon. (Mrs.) Ebiuwou Koku-Obiyai, Governor Douye Diri said his deputy’s death has thrown the state into deep shock and mourning.
Diri said the Deputy Governor was carrying out his normal official duties earlier in the day before his passage.
The Governor added that the deputy governor reportedly collapsed while heading to a scheduled meeting inside his office and was rushed to the Federal Medical Centre, Yenagoa subsequent after which doctors later confirmed him dead.
He described Ewhrudjakpo’s passing as a painful and monumental loss to Bayelsa State and the entire country.
He praised him as an accomplished public servant who served in different capacities, including Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Senator for Bayelsa West, and Deputy Governor since 2020.
Diri also expressed heartfelt condolences to his wife, Barrister Beatrice Ewhrudjakpo, their children, the larger Ewhrudjakpo family, the Ofoni Federated Community, and former Governor Henry Seriake Dickson.
He noted that the late Deputy Governor’s contributions to the state would forever be remembered.
In honour of his memory, Governor Diri has declared a three-day state mourning starting Friday, December 12, 2025.
During this period, all flags in government offices and institutions are to be flown at half-mast.
The Governor also prayed for God to grant comfort and strength to the family of the deceased and to the entire people of Bayelsa State as they navigate this period of grief.
