Public and private schools in Bayelsa State, on Monday, remained closed following the non-conclusion of the collation of the governorship election results by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The state government had last week declared Friday a public holiday to enable indigenes and residents to travel to their various registration areas to exercise their franchise on Saturday.

INEC had, after announcing the results of six local government areas out of total eight on Sunday night, said the declaration of results from Sagbama and Southern Ijaw local government areas would resume from 12:00 noon on Monday.

Recall that election materials meant for Sagbama LGA were lost during a boat mishap that occurred along the Amassoma-Sagbama river on Friday night.

But, INEC, in fulfilment of its earlier promise, arranged and sent another set of voting materials to the area for the election to hold as scheduled.

A visit by LEADERSHIP to some of the schools in Yenagoa, the state capital, it was observed that only one private school, Holy Child School, located along Kpansia Road, was open.

Speaking with our correspondent, a parent, Mrs. Chinyere Egberenido, said the continued closure of schools in the State due to the election was not in the best interest of the future of the children in the state.

Egberenido wondered why the collation of election results was yet to be concluded in the state when INEC had already declared winners of two other states where governorship elections held the same day.
