Abia State governor, Dr Alex Otti, has urged members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) to approach the programme with discipline, commitment, humility and a willingness to learn.
Otti stated this at the swearing-in ceremony of the 2026 Batch C Stream I corps members deployed to the state at the NYSC Permanent Orientation Camp, Umunna, Bende local government area.
Represented by the state’s commissioner for sports and youth development, Mr Nwaobilor Ananaba, the governor said the service remained an important instrument of national integration for young Nigerians.
“I therefore expect each of you to contribute meaningfully to the development of your host communities and to leave a positive mark wherever you are posted.
“Your service will not be measured only by its successful completion, but also by the impact you make, the relationships you build and the skills you acquire along the way.
“At this juncture, I wish to assure you that this administration remains firmly committed to the welfare of all corps members serving in the state,” the governor said.
He added that he had no doubt that, at the end of their service year, the corps members would look back with satisfaction at the experiences they had gained and the lives they had touched.
In his address, the commissioner assured the corps members that the state government remained committed to their welfare and security.
He said: “Through the NYSC and security agencies, our government shall continue to ensure that your security and welfare remains a top priority at all times.
“We are constantly in synergy with security agencies to constantly watch and secure your various accommodations and places of primary assignment.”
In his speech, the state coordinator of the NYSC, Mr Yunusa Tanimu, said the orientation course prepares corps members for their statutory service and exposes them to discipline, teamwork, national integration, civic responsibility, safety and leadership.
Tanimu thanked the state government for the commencement of the new state allowance for corps members, provision of equipment at the NYSC State Secretariat and renovation work at the orientation camp.
He, however, appealed for the speedy implementation of the second phase of the camp renovation and urgent intervention against emerging erosion threats within the camp.
