I asked after lunch was through and I walked her to the car. Farida shrugged dramatically. “Ask our leaders and those fat politicians.” I laughed even though I knew it was not a laughing matter.

“Honestly Maimuna, I’m surprised you’re also complaining!” Farida attacked subtly. I was not worried, I often got such attacks because of my father’s position in the country.

“Believe it or not, it’s affecting me Farida. Forget my parents, I am a patriot.” Farida got in the car and paused, hands on wheels. “What if I said nothing can be done unless the greed and ‘myself and my family first’ mentality ends?
