The Benue State Emergency Management Agency (BSEMA) has reaffirmed its commitment to maintain a strong collaboration with the Federal Government to support the resettlement and empowerment of the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in the state.
Executive Secretary of BSEMA, Sir James Iorpuu disclosed this during the monthly distribution of food and non-food items to IDPs.
He said the measure was to enable them enjoy the Easter festivity with their families, stressing that the gesture also covers refugees and orphanage homes.
Iorapuu who is also the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management in the state, said the agency was working tirelessly to support IDPs across the state for a better welfare and giving them a sense of dignity.
“The agency has been consistent in delivering timely interventions to IDPs monthly to nib in the bud the effects of hunger and starvation in camps.
“I am planning for a tour of all the IDP camps to better understand their immediate needs aside from food and strategise on how to tackle them for better improvement,” Iorpuu said.
He added that the agency is working with the United Nations, international and local non-governmental organisations, as well as civil society groups to support IDPs in many areas of their needs.
The permanent secretary commended the security agencies in their efforts to ensure peace in communities as well as overseeing the success of the state interventions in IDPs.
He added that the Benue State government has secured and cleared several hectares of land and formed over 200 cooperatives to commence IDPs farm project.
“BSEMA is also implementing this plan to support durable solutions for displaced citizens and improve national security, by enabling farmers to return to their communities and regain self-sufficiency,” he added.
