Beyond The Questions: Isbae U’s Moment Of Honour With Pete Edochie

For a man whose interviews are built around uncomfortable questions, unexpected confrontations and a deliberate willingness to put his guests on the spot, Isbae U’s recent show of appreciation to veteran actor Pete Edochie carried a different kind of message.
After the widely discussed episode of Curiosity Made Me Ask featuring the legendary actor, a new moment has caught the attention of viewers: Isbae U publicly appreciating Edochie for accepting his invitation and appearing on the show.
On the surface, it may appear to be an ordinary gesture of gratitude. But in a society where respect for elders remains deeply embedded in cultural identity, the moment has taken on a bigger meaning.
Isbae U’s interview style is famously provocative. His conversation with Edochie generated considerable discussion, with some viewers questioning whether certain questions crossed the line of what was considered appropriate when speaking with a respected elder and veteran of Nigerian cinema.
The conversation itself, however, also gave Edochie an opportunity to speak at length about his career, his views on Nollywood and his personal understanding of his place in the industry. In the interview, he said he was “glad to be celebrated” when asked about being described as a legend.
That is why the subsequent gesture from Isbae U resonates because respect does not always mean silence.
There is a difference between asking difficult questions and forgetting the weight of the person sitting across from you.
For many Nigerians, particularly within cultures where age and achievement carry significant social meaning, an elder is not simply another guest. There is an understanding that experience deserves acknowledgement and that certain boundaries should be approached with care.
Pete Edochie represents more than a popular actor. His career spans generations, and his name has become intertwined with the cultural memory of Nigerian cinema. His distinctive roles, commanding delivery and proverbial wisdom have made him one of Nollywood’s most recognisable figures.
That symbolism became even more apparent during the same interview when Edochie spoke confidently about his position among Nigerian actors, saying he considered himself “bigger than all of them.” He also reflected on being called a legend, saying he appreciated being celebrated.
For Isbae U, the moment of appreciation therefore feels significant.
It suggests that beneath the irreverence of a younger generation of digital creators is still an awareness that some people paved the road before you arrived on it.
Nigeria is currently witnessing a fascinating collision between two cultures: the old culture of hierarchy, titles, age and traditional respect, and the new culture of social media, where everybody from a veteran actor to a 20-something content creator can sit on the same digital stage.
Isbae U may ask the questions. He may challenge his guests. He may deliberately provoke reactions. Appreciating Pete Edochie afterwards is a reminder that irreverence and respect do not necessarily have to be enemies.
Sometimes, you can question a legend and still acknowledge that he is a legend. And perhaps that is the cultural symbolism in this moment: the future may speak differently, but it should never become so loud that it forgets to honour the people who came before it.
