A bill seeking to create a Coastal State from the present Ondo State has passed its first reading in the Senate.
Sponsored by Senator Jimoh Ibrahim, representing Ondo South Senatorial District, the bill aims to amend the constitution to facilitate the establishment of the proposed state.
During plenary yesterday in Abuja, the bill successfully passed its first reading on the Senate floor.
Senator Ibrahim emphasised that creating the Coastal State would accelerate the development of riverine communities in the Southern Senatorial District of Ondo State.
Confident in the bill’s prospects, Senator Ibrahim expressed optimism that it would pass the second and third readings in subsequent Senate sittings.
He reaffirmed that the Coastal State must be carved out of Ondo State and firmly opposed any plans to include the Ondo South Senatorial District in the proposed Ijebu State.
“Ondo Southern Senatorial District can never be part of the proposed Ijebu State,” he said, reiterating his commitment to protecting the interests of his constituents.
