Nigerians have been urged to embrace a healthy lifestyle through consistent physical and mental exercise.
The Right Reverend Joseph Musa, Anglican Bishop of Ida Diocese, delivered this advice during a “Walk and Jog” event and health symposium organised by members of the Church of the Pentecost FHA, Lugbe, Abuja.
Bishop Musa, who participated in the exercise shortly after attending the Anglican Bishops’ GAFCON Conference in Abuja, encouraged the faithful to prioritise exercise. He highlighted that maintaining physical and mental health significantly reduces the risk of chronic diseases.
“I am happy seeing you exercising. It’s also scriptural as exercise is of some value. So please keep it up. It’s for your own good. How I wish I had enough time to roll with you all.”
Bishop Musa’s quote underscores the importance of physical activity, not just for personal well-being but also aligning it with spiritual teachings.
Mrs. Stella Ozugha, a health worker, emphasised the importance of moderate eating habits, cautioning that an unhealthy lifestyle poses a significant threat to one’s health. She also demonstrated resuscitation techniques for an unresponsive, non-breathing patient.
“Ensure the area is safe for you and the victim. Check for responsiveness by shaking shoulders and calling out before opening the airway by placing one hand on the forehead, the other on the chin, and gently tilting the head back.”
This instruction provides vital first aid guidance for an emergency situation.
Dame Nneka Godbless, Chairperson of the 2026 Mothering Sunday Committee, explained that physical exercise was one of the initiatives designed to keep church members fit for their daily activities. Dame Godbless confirmed that the sports programme was part of the events leading up to this year’s International Women’s Day and Mothering Sunday, scheduled for 15th March 2026.
Loveth Bako, President of the Women’s Wing of the Church of Pentecost, commended the participants, who were visibly exerting themselves. She encouraged parishioners to combine their desire for fitness with spirituality.
“Use spirituality and physical health as a vessel for spiritual expression. You must know that your body is the temple of God. So ensure you discipline yourself through exercise.”
This statement connects physical well-being with spiritual devotion, viewing the body as a sacred vessel.
The three-kilometre walk, which took place within the Lugbe Federal Housing Authority, also included aerobics and saw the participation of over eighty church members.
