Canadian singer, David Clayton-Thomas, the iconic voice of Blood, Sweat & Tears, has died at the age of 84.
His publicist said he passed away peacefully in a Toronto hospital. No cause of death was disclosed.
Born in England, Clayton-Thomas moved to Toronto after the Second World War. He faced a difficult childhood that included homelessness and time in prison. Music later became his path to success.
He first gained attention with David Clayton-Thomas and the Fabulous Shays before joining Blood, Sweat & Tears in New York. The band achieved major success with Spinning Wheel, a hit written by Clayton-Thomas. The song reached No. 2 on the US charts and earned three Grammy nominations, winning one.
The band’s breakthrough album sold more than 10 million copies worldwide. It remained on the US charts for 109 weeks and won five Grammy Awards. Other well-known hits included ‘And When I Die’ and ‘You’ve Made Me So Very Happy’.
Reflecting on the band’s unique blend of talent, Clayton-Thomas once said:
“Blood, Sweat & Tears was such an unusual mix of people. We had guys in that band whose background was totally Juilliard… and then we had another faction like me who were basically saloon-trained rock and roll R&B Telecaster players.”
Music executive Clive Davis described him as an exceptional musician. Clayton-Thomas also said he always believed the band was destined for great success.
“I don’t mean to sound arrogant, but yeah. The first time I walked in and sang with that band, we were in shock. It was one of those electrical things that happen.”
After leaving the band, David Clayton-Thomas released several solo albums and formed a 10-piece band in Toronto. He also devoted time to supporting youth charities.
In 2010, he published his memoir, reflecting on his life and career.
His story returned to the spotlight in 2023 with the documentary What the Hell Happened to Blood, Sweat & Tears?. The film examined the band’s controversial Cold War-era tour and its lasting impact.
