To enhance navigational safety for waterways users, the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) has laid water buoys from Gbajibo in Niger state to Gbajibo-Mundi in Kwara state.
The number of buoys used was 10 red colour and 6 green colour. The
river is generally deep with the least depth of 21.3m.
In a chat with LEADERSHIP, the Assistant General Manager, Corporate
Affairs, NIWA, Suleiman Makama, the Authority is taking this proactive step towards safeguarding the waterways.
“These buoys serve as critical markers, indicating safe navigation channels, warning of hazards and designating protected areas, ” the statement said.
It would be recalled that the Managing Director/CEO of NIWA, Mr Bola Oyebamiji, had, during the 2025 Management retreat, emphasized safety regulations and improved operational efficiency across the Nation’s Inland Waterways.
