Hajia Bola Muinat Shagaya stands as one of Nigeria’s most remarkable symbols of entrepreneurial vision, resilience and philanthropy. She is a woman whose journey from modest professional beginnings to the pinnacle of African business leadership continues to inspire generations.

For more than four decades, Shagaya has built a reputation as one of Africa’s most influential businesswomen, creating opportunities across industries while championing philanthropy and women’s empowerment. Her story reflects the power of vision, discipline and strategic thinking in building sustainable wealth.

Born on October 10, 1959, in Ilorin, Kwara State, Shagaya’s early academic journey laid the foundation for her later success. She attended Queen’s School, Ilorin, for her secondary education before proceeding to Ahmadu Bello University in Zaria. She later expanded her academic exposure in the United States at Armstrong College in California, where she studied economics and accountancy.

Her professional career began at the Central Bank of Nigeria, where she worked in the audit department. While the role offered stability and valuable financial experience, Shagaya’s entrepreneurial instincts soon pushed her toward a more ambitious path. In 1983, she left the banking sector to pursue business opportunities that would eventually transform her into a formidable figure in Nigeria’s corporate landscape.

Her first major venture was in the importation and distribution of photographic materials, where she introduced the globally recognised Konica brand into the Nigerian and West African markets. The initiative quickly gained traction and established her as a pioneering distributor of high-quality photographic technology in the region.

Building on this early success, Shagaya founded Fotofair Nigeria Limited in 1997, establishing advanced photo-laboratory services using Japanese technology. Over time, Fotofair expanded across the country, operating dozens of laboratories and becoming one of Nigeria’s most prominent photography service providers.

Yet Shagaya’s ambitions extended far beyond photography. She went on to establish the Bolmus Group International, a diversified conglomerate with investments spanning oil and gas, banking, real estate and other sectors. Under the Bolmus umbrella, her business empire steadily expanded into strategic areas of the economy.

Among her most significant ventures is Practoil Limited, where she serves as Managing Director. The company has grown into one of Nigeria’s largest importers and distributors of base oil, supplying lubricant blending plants and supporting the country’s industrial ecosystem.

Her influence also extends into the financial sector. Shagaya served on the board of Unity Bank Plc for more than eight years, contributing to corporate governance and strategic development within the banking industry.

Despite her extensive business commitments, Shagaya remains deeply committed to philanthropy and social development. She has consistently used her influence and resources to support initiatives that promote education, youth development and women’s economic empowerment. Through mentorship and advocacy, she has encouraged countless women to pursue entrepreneurship and leadership roles.

Her contributions have not gone unnoticed. In recognition of her role in Nigeria’s economic growth and productivity, former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan conferred on her the national honour of Member of the Order of the Niger (MON). She also received the National Productivity Order of Merit Award, further cementing her legacy as a transformative business leader.

Beyond the boardroom, Shagaya is known for her strong family values. She is married to Alhaji Shagaya, a respected transport magnate from Kwara State, and together they have raised six children who are actively involved in business, public service and entrepreneurship across different parts of the world.

Hajia Bola Shagaya’s legacy extends far beyond her wealth or business achievements. She represents a generation of Nigerian entrepreneurs who built industries, created jobs and expanded opportunities at home and abroad.

Her journey—from a young auditor to a business icon—remains a powerful reminder that vision, perseverance and generosity can shape not only personal success but also national progress.
