Borno Implements N70,000 Minimum Wage

Borno State Commissioner for Budget and Planning, Dr Babagana Mallambe Mustapha, yesterday said that the state government has successfully completed the implementation of the N70,000 minimum wage for all categories of civil servants with October 2024 salaries.

Dr. Mustapha who disclosed this to journalists in Maiduguri, said the implementation is yet another significant milestone for the state and a testament to the commitment of Governor Babagana Umara Zulum to the welfare of his workforce.

He appreciated Governor Zulum for all his support and political will for the successful completion of the task by the minimum wage committee which he chaired, adding that the implementation process was a collaborative effort and commitment of all the committee members and, in particular, the head of service, labour leaders, the technical team, the State controller of labour and all other relevant stakeholders for their dedication to see the smooth and efficient implementation of the new minimum wage structure.

He noted that the implementation of the N70,000 minimum wage will have a positive impact on the lives of the state’s civil servants and their families, saying that one of the key benefits among others include improved living standards.

“This salary increment will cushion the effect of subsidy removal and significantly improve the living standards of our civil servants and their families. The implementation of the new minimum wage demonstrates the government’s recognition of the invaluable considerations of the civil servants and this will Inshallah make them more productive.

“The infusion of additional income into the local economy will stimulate economic growth and development in the state,” the commissioner said.

In his remarks, the head of service (HoS) , Barr Mallam Famnami, reiterated that the committee in carrying out the assignment took cognizance of the need to comply with the law on minimum wage and also strike a balance between the need to pay workers a living minimum wage or a reasonable wage under the present dispensation.

“Let me reiterate to our civil servants that for every right there is also the corresponding obligations to perform on their part.

I therefore enjoin them to be even more dedicated and committed to their works and reciprocate all the good gestures of Governor Zulum’s administration to the workers in the state,” he said.
