The Borno State Police Command has arrested four suspects over alleged criminal conspiracy and the fraudulent withdrawal of N285,000 from a resident’s account in Maiduguri.
The command also recovered 40 OPay and Moniepoint ATM cards from the suspects as exhibits in the ongoing investigation.
The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the command, ASP Nahum Kenneth Daso, disclosed this in a press statement issued on Thursday in Maiduguri.
According to the statement, the incident was reported on October 25, 2026, by one Unus Burum, a resident of Shuwari II, Maiduguri.
Daso said two young men allegedly approached the victim, claiming to be Moniepoint agents who could assist him with financial services.
The victim reportedly requested an increase in his transaction limit, after which the suspects collected his mobile phone and successfully logged into his account.
The statement said the suspects subsequently withdrew ₦285,000 from the victim’s account without authorisation.
Following the report, operatives of the State Intelligence Department (SID) commenced an investigation and traced the Point of Sale (POS) transactions to the agents allegedly involved in the incident.
Further investigative efforts led to the arrest of four suspects, while 40 OPay and Moniepoint ATM cards were recovered from them.
The police spokesman added that the suspects reportedly confessed to their involvement in the alleged crime during the investigation.
The command, under the leadership of Commissioner of Police Naziru Abdulmajid, said it remained committed to combating financial crimes, protecting lives and property, and ensuring that perpetrators of crime were brought to justice.
It advised members of the public against disclosing their bank account details, personal identification numbers (PINs), passwords and one-time passwords (OTPs) to strangers.
Residents were also urged not to allow unauthorised persons access to their mobile banking applications and to promptly report suspicious activities to the nearest police station.
The command assured the public that appropriate legal action would be taken against anyone found culpable at the conclusion of the investigation.
