Juraci Rosa Alves, the 88-year-old Brazilian, allegedly regained consciousness while he was being prepared for his wake at a funeral home in Presidente Prudente, Brazil.

Juraci was admitted to the hospital on May 16 and was declared dead due to respiratory failure at the Santa Casa de Presidente Bernardes hospital.

According to reports, a funeral home was called upon to transport Alves and prepare him for his wake. But while staff were preparing the body for the wake, they detected signs of life.

In an interview with local media, Jacqueline Brogiato, the funeral home’s technical nurse supervisor, stated that, “Our staff carried out the transfer, following all standard procedures and protocols.”

“When they arrived at the laboratory and placed him on the table, staff noticed movement around his stomach area and became uncertain whether he was still breathing”, she said.

“Once we realised he was showing signs of life, our immediate focus was to help him”.

“I quickly carried out first aid and tried to clear his airway before emergency responders arrived. Everything happened so fast. As soon as the medical team got there, the doctor sedated and intubated him before he was taken to the hospital for treatment.”

The hospital in Presidente Prudente has said it will open an internal investigation into the incident and is “available to provide any necessary clarification”.

Observers say this development reflects growing public interest in unusual survival stories and rare medical cases, which often gain attention worldwide on social media.
