In a tense and fiercely contested encounter at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena on Thursday, Sporting Lagos secured an immediate return to the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Osun United.
The win capped off a dominant campaign in the NNL Conference B, ensuring the club’s top-flight status for the upcoming season after a two-year absence.
The only goal of the match arrived early in the 17th minute, when midfielder Alex Leme calmly slotted home from close range following a swift counter-attack.
Leme’s strike proved enough to separate the two sides, as Sporting Lagos’ defense held firm under sustained pressure from Osun United in the second half.
Head coach Jeffrey Butler, whose tactical setup has been widely praised throughout the season, watched his side control possession and limit clear-cut chances for the visitors.
The victory confirmed Sporting Lagos as champions of Conference B, finishing atop the table with 36 points from 18 matches. Their consistency over the campaign blending youthful energy with experienced heads proved decisive in a highly competitive group.
Elsewhere in the conference, Akwa United ended their season on a winning note, beating Solution FC 2-1. The Promise Keepers took the lead in the 50th minute through Aniebiet Sunday, before Michael Okenwa doubled the advantage just three minutes later.
Solution FC pulled one goal back late in the game, but it wasn’t enough to change the final standings, as Akwa United settled for second place.
Sporting Lagos now join Inter Lagos and Doma United, who had previously sealed their own promotions to the NPFL.
The three promoted sides will look to make their mark in Nigeria’s top division next season, with Sporting Lagos hoping to build on their promising return after a two-year absence from the elite tier.
