The Benue State University Teaching Hospital (BSUTH), Makurdi, has achieved a major milestone with the successful fitting of its first body-powered trans-humeral prosthesis on Mrs. Blessing Agidi, a survivor armed attack in the State.
Head, Public Relations and Protocol of
BSUTH, Tsenzughul Moses, in a statement, said the groundbreaking procedure was carried out on Wednesday, February 25, 2026, at the tertiary hospital.
According to the statement, the procedure marks a significant advancement in specialised orthopedic and rehabilitative services available at the state-owned tertiary health institution.
Speaking after the procedure, BSUTH Chief Medical Director, Dr. Terungwa Stephen Hwande, expressed appreciation to the governor of Benue State, Hyacinth Iormem Alia, for supporting the hospital’s drive toward global standards.
Hwande noted that the governor’s commitment has positioned the hospital to compete with other teaching hospitals worldwide, while gradually transforming it into a medical hub for advanced and specialised healthcare services.
The CMD also commended wife of the paramount ruler of Tiv nation, Tor Tiv, Her Royal Majesty, Prof. Felicia Iorzua Ayatse, for sponsoring the prosthetic procedure.
He described her gesture as a demonstration of compassion and a reflection of genuine concern for vulnerable citizens.
The CMD stated that beyond royal status lies the greater responsibility of caring for ordinary people, describing the sponsorship as both a moral and Christian obligation that will remain memorable in the hospital’s history.
Hwande further stated that the hospital was collaborating with Ishk Tolaram Foundation (ITF), a Lagos-based Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) and has enlisted over 300 persons for limb replacement, while recruiting specialised prosthetic personnel to establish a dedicated prosthetics department at the hospital.
