Akume made the remarks on Sunday during a solemn National Church Service held in in honour of the late former president in Abuja, as part of a series of official events marking his passing.

While addressing dignitaries and worshippers at the service, the SGF in a statement by the Director Information in his office, Segun Imohiosen, called on Nigerians to reflect deeply on the values that defined Buhari’s leadership which include discipline, conviction, patriotism and integrity.

“Though not perfect, President Buhari fought a good fight, finished the race, and kept the faith,” Akume said. “His legacy in national security, social protection, and institutional reforms—including the landmark Petroleum Industry Act—will remain a proud chapter in Nigeria’s development history.”

The SGF further commended President Bola Tinubu for his decision to rename the University of Maiduguri as Muhammadu Buhari University, Maiduguri, in honour of the late leader.

According to Akume, “This gesture is not merely symbolic. It is about inspiring future generations to lead with courage and sacrifice, just as President Buhari did.”

The interdenominational memorial service brought together prominent Nigerians from various sectors, including the representative of the Senate President and Deputy Senate Majority Whip, Senator Onyekachi Nwaebonyi; members of the National Assembly, Ministers, former SGFs, retired Permanent Secretaries, and senior government officials.

Prayers, hymns, scripture readings, and special tributes featured in the special service for the former President who served as Nigeria’s Head of State from 1983 to 1985 and later as a democratically elected President from 2015 to 2023.
