The special adviser to the President on Senate Matters, Senator Basheer Lado, has described the passing of former President Muhammadu Buhari as a “profound national loss” and, for him, “an intensely personal tragedy,” reflecting on decades of shared history, mentorship, and service.

In a statement he issued to journalists yesterday in Abuja, Lado reflected on the lasting impact Buhari had on his life – both professionally and personally – portraying him as a figure who embodied patriotism, discipline, humility, and an unwavering commitment to Nigeria’s unity and progress.

“Buhari was far more than a leader; he was a father figure, a mentor, and a trusted family friend,” he said.

“His guidance, wisdom, and steadfast belief in my potential left an indelible mark on my life and career.”
The senator recalled Buhari’s personal support during key moments in his political journey, including a congratulatory letter following his decision to join the All Progressives Congress (APC), as well as his pivotal appointments under Buhari’s administration—first as Federal Commissioner of the National Commission for Refugees, Migrants, and Internally Displaced Persons, and later as Director-General of the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP).

One of the most touching anecdotes shared in the tribute was from Lado’s tenure as Federal Commissioner.

He recounted informing the then-President of plans to construct housing for displaced persons nationwide. Buhari, visibly moved, responded: “I am proud of this initiative, and I bless it.”

Senator Lado credited this encouragement as a turning point, which led to the successful establishment of resettlement cities across the country.

He also highlighted the personal bond Buhari shared with his family, citing the former President’s close relationship with his late uncle, former Head of State, General Sani Abacha.
Buhari’s condolence call following the death of Lado’s mother—despite the demands of his presidential duties—was described as a moment of deep solace.

Lado further recalled what would become their final planned engagement: an invitation extended to Buhari to serve as Guest of Honour at a Qur’anic recitation competition held in honour of Hajiya Abibatu Mogaji, the late mother of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Although Buhari was unable to attend due to a medical appointment in London, he sent a personal letter of regret and a representative in his place—a gesture Senator Lado described as a testament to Buhari’s loyalty, integrity, and spiritual depth.

“President Muhammadu Buhari lived a life defined by sacrifice, simplicity, and service,” he said, praising Buhari’s dedication from his military career to his tenure as a democratically elected Head of State.

On behalf of his family and office, Senator Lado extended heartfelt condolences to the late President’s family, close associates, and the Nigerian nation, praying: “May Almighty Allah, in His infinite mercy, forgive his shortcomings, accept his good deeds, and grant him eternal rest in Aljannatul Firdaus.”
