Yobe State Governor Mai Mala Buni has appealed to the North East Development Commission (NEDC) to renovate the Geidam Polytechnic and Gujba College of Agriculture in the state.
He made the call when the chairman and members of the newly constituted Governing Council of the commission paid him a courtesy visit in Damaturu.
The governor who was represented by his deputy, Hon. Idi Barde Gubana during the visit, said the visit gave him the rare opportunity to discuss issues that border on the mandate of the commission in Yobe.
He lamented that the activities of Boko Haram in the College of Agriculture, Science and Technology Gujba had caused a huge humanitarian crisis in recent times, as over 100 were killed while buildings and utility vehicles were destroyed.
He added “Since then, the institution was relocated to one of the secondary schools in Damaturu, the state capital, waiting for the intervention of the commission. Equally, the Gaidam polytechnic experienced a similar case, as buildings and utility vehicles were destroyed.”
He appealed to the chairman and management of the NEDC to look in to their predicament and find a solution to enable them possess requirements of the NBTE.
He urged the NEDC to ensure full implementation of the masterplan to fast- track development and recovery of the North East sub- region.
The governor said many young people from Yobe had never enjoyed as most of them are disconnected from the society due to the financial inability to acquire education as most of them are victims of insurgency.
In his remarks, the chairman, governing board, Major Gen. Paul Tarfa (rtd) said they were in the state on familiarisation tour to assess completed and ongoing projects as well as receive demands of the people in the state.
Tarfa assured that the board would do its best to ensure that the North East accesses development without hindrance.
He added that he would work closely with the state government, and commended the present administration for the rapid infrastructure development in the state.
