The International Organization for Migration (IOM) has announced the appointment of Cameroonian professional footballer Nicolas Brice Moumi Ngamaleu as its latest celebrity supporter. This role aims to bolster outreach efforts, promoting safe migration routes and empowering young people across Cameroon and the wider African continent.
IOM confirmed that Mr Moumi Ngamaleu will back national and regional initiatives focused on protecting migrants and raising awareness for safe migration.
According to the organisation, the Cameroonian considerable influence and dedication to social impact are expected to significantly enhance advocacy among broader audiences, particularly young, aspiring athletes and students.
Ngamaleu, 30, has represented Cameroon’s national team in numerous Africa Cup of Nations tournaments and has enjoyed a professional career playing in Cameroon, Austria, Switzerland, and Russia. The winger was part of the Cameroon squad that secured third place at the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations on home soil and has earned over 40 caps for the Indomitable Lions.
“I’m privileged to lend my voice to protect lives and dreams through safe migration for young Cameroonians and Africans,” Ngamaleu stated.
This appointment comes at a crucial time, as Cameroon experiences a rise in irregular migration among its youth. Many are tempted to pursue opportunities abroad via perilous routes. IOM data on returns indicates an increasing number of young Cameroonians, including aspiring athletes seeking professional sports careers, attempting irregular migration to Europe and North Africa.
During these journeys, many face exploitation, trafficking, and life-threatening conditions. Peer-to-peer messaging from successful athletes like Mr Moumi Ngamaleu is therefore vital in altering perceptions and advocating for safer alternatives.
“We are proud to welcome Nicolas Brice Moumi Ngamaleu as an IOM celebrity supporter. His journey resonates strongly with young people across Cameroon and beyond, reminding us that ambition must be supported by safe and informed pathways,” said Abdel Rahmane Diop, IOM Cameroon Chief of Mission. “This partnership reflects our commitment to working with the sports sector and other partners to mobilise resources, scale prevention efforts, and invest in initiatives that protect lives while nurturing the aspirations of young people.”
The IOM, founded in 1951, is the leading UN-related intergovernmental organisation dedicated to promoting humane and orderly migration for the benefit of all.
