CAN Honours Legacy Of Heroic Plateau Imam Who Saved 262 Christians

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has paid tribute to the late Imam Abubakar Abdullahi, whose heroic actions during a 2018 massacre saved the lives of 262 Christians in Plateau State, cementing his legacy as a national symbol of interfaith courage and unity.

The CAN President, Archbishop Daniel Okoh, in a statement on Saturday, recalled the Imam’s “rare moral bravery” and framed his sacrifice as a guiding light for a nation often scarred by sectarian violence.

He recalled the violent events of June 2018 in the village of Yelwan Gidin Akwati, Barki Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State, when armed assailants descended upon the community.

According to the statement, as the attack unfolded, the then 83-year-old Imam Abdullahi ushered 262 Christians into his mosque and home, hiding many in his personal living quarters.

“When the attackers demanded he identify the Christians, he refused, placing his own life in peril to shield them.

“By choosing to protect innocent lives at great personal risk, he saved 262 Christians during a violent massacre in 2018, standing firmly on the side of humanity when it mattered most.

“His actions transcended religious boundaries and powerfully affirmed that the sanctity of human life is sacred above all else,” he said.

CAN emphasised that the Imam’s heroism extended far beyond the immediate act of salvation, that it served as a potent antidote to division and a blueprint for peace.

“This singular act of heroism did more than save lives. It reinforced hope, strengthened interfaith harmony, and reminded our nation that peace is possible when conscience, love, and faith guide our actions,” he said.

In 2021, CAN formally recognised this “exceptional service to humanity” by presenting Imam Abdullahi with an award during its Sapphire Anniversary celebrations.

“While plaques may fade with time, his legacy will endure as a shining example for religious leaders, communities, and generations to come,” Okoh stated.

Moving beyond remembrance, CAN who called for the nation to actively preserve and promote the Imam’s example, advocated for continued honour to his memory, including engagement with his family and broad public recognition of his noble sacrifice, so that his story may inspire unity, mutual respect, and peaceful coexistence across our nation.

“As we mourn his passing, we celebrate a life well lived in service to God and humanity. We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, his community, and all who were touched by his remarkable example. May his legacy continue to speak where words fall short,” he stated.
