Applicants who submit false or altered documents or provide misleading information in Canadian immigration applications could face serious penalties, including a ban from Canada for at least five years, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has warned.

The department issued the warning on Wednesday through its official X account, cautioning applicants against immigration fraud and stressing the need to provide genuine and accurate information throughout the application process.

IRCC said fraudulent documents could include passports, travel documents, visas, language test results, employment records, educational certificates, relationship documents, police certificates and court records.

“Providing false or altered documents or information can have serious consequences,” IRCC said.

The department also warned applicants that providing false medical documents or deliberately misleading a panel physician about existing or previous medical conditions constitutes fraud.

“Providing false medical documents or misleading a panel physician about existing or previous medical conditions is considered fraud,” IRCC warned.

Applicants seeking to renew their permanent resident status or apply for Canadian citizenship must also accurately disclose their physical presence in the country.

According to IRCC, submitting false information or documents, whether by an applicant, representative or interpreter, could lead to the refusal of an application.

Other possible consequences include a permanent fraud record with IRCC, loss of temporary or permanent resident status or Canadian citizenship, a five-year bar on applying for citizenship, and removal from Canada.

IRCC also cautioned applicants against entering into relationships of convenience for the purpose of obtaining Canadian immigration status.

Such arrangements may involve marriages, common-law relationships or conjugal partnerships entered into primarily to secure immigration benefits.

“Immigration officers may use document checks, interviews and home visits to determine whether a relationship is genuine,” IRCC said.

The department added that Canadian citizens or permanent residents involved in a marriage of convenience for immigration purposes could face criminal charges.

IRCC further warned against chargeback fraud, which occurs when an immigration application fee paid by credit card is reversed by the applicant or someone acting on their behalf.

“A reversed payment could result in your application being cancelled, delayed or refused,” the department said.

It added that applicants involved in such fraud could potentially face a ban from travelling to Canada for up to 10 years.

IRCC said it works with the Canada Border Services Agency, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, foreign police services and document-issuing authorities to detect and investigate immigration fraud.

The department said it contacts issuing authorities to verify documents, uses programme-integrity measures to deter fraudulent applications and pursues cases of misrepresentation involving people attempting to exploit Canada’s immigration system.

IRCC urged applicants to ensure that all information and documents submitted as part of Canadian immigration applications are genuine, complete and accurate.
