Portugal defender João Cancelo has leapt to the defence of football icons Cristiano Ronaldo and Neymar, insisting neither player has anything left to prove despite growing criticism during the FIFA World Cup.
Speaking ahead of Portugal’s crucial group-stage clash with Uzbekistan, Cancelo dismissed suggestions that Ronaldo’s influence is fading after a subdued display against DR Congo. The veteran forward has faced questions over his place in the starting line-up, with some pundits arguing that age is beginning to catch up with the five-time Ballon d’Or winner.
Neymar has also come under scrutiny, with critics questioning his inclusion in Brazil’s squad following an injury-disrupted season and inconsistent form.
Cancelo, however, described the criticism as superficial and driven by media attention rather than football reality.
“I don’t think Neymar or Cristiano need to prove anything to anyone,” he said. “Their talent and what they have achieved in football speak for themselves. The criticism and doubts generate headlines, but they do not change who these players are.”
The full-back highlighted Ronaldo’s remarkable goalscoring record and Neymar’s status as Brazil’s all-time leading scorer, arguing that both players have already secured their places among football’s greatest legends.
“Cristiano is our leader and Neymar is Brazil’s heartbeat,” Cancelo added. “They know exactly what they represent for their countries.”
Portugal now turn their attention to Uzbekistan, with Cancelo confident that performances on the pitch, rather than public opinion, will provide the ultimate response to the critics.
