Former Real Madrid goalkeeper Iker Casillas believes Tuesday’s FIFA World Cup semi-final between Spain and France will produce one of the standout matches of the tournament.
The Spanish legend said both sides have yet to reach their full potential and expects them to raise their performances significantly when they meet at Dallas Stadium for a place in the final.
Reacting after Spain’s 2-1 quarter-final victory over Belgium on Friday, Casillas wrote on X:
“It appears to me that both France and Spain have operated at 70 per cent of their potential. Tuesday’s match will be a different story. An incredible game is on the horizon.”
France have been among the tournament’s most impressive teams, with Didier Deschamps’ side scoring 16 goals in six matches — the highest tally at the competition.
Spain, meanwhile, have relied on defensive solidity, conceding just once in six outings while maintaining an unbeaten run.
La Roja will also take confidence from recent meetings with Les Bleus, having won their last two encounters, including victories in the UEFA European Championship and the UEFA Nations League.
The eagerly anticipated semi-final is expected to pit the tournament’s most prolific attack against its stingiest defence.
