Catholic Bishops Ask FG To Stop Benue Killings

Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria (CBCN) has condemned the recent brutal killings in Benue State, calling on both state and federal authorities to take urgent, concrete steps to end the violence and restore peace.

In a statement issued yesterday, the president of CBCN, Most Rev. Lucius Iwejuru Ugorji, described the persistent attacks on Benue communities as “an affront to God and a stain on our humanity.”

Expressing outrage over the bloodshed, Archbishop Ugorji stated, “These cold-blooded attacks on defenceless communities where lives are lost, homes destroyed and families left in anguish, must stop. There is no justification for this continued carnage in Benue or anywhere in Nigeria.”

He emphasised that the government’s failure to protect citizens constitutes both a moral and constitutional crisis.

“No matter how well a government pays salaries or builds roads, its failure to protect human life renders its achievements hollow. The sanctity of human life is supreme and inviolable,” he stated.

The bishops called for swift justice, urging security agencies to identify and arrest perpetrators, ensure diligent prosecution and respond with professionalism and compassion.

“Every death in such circumstances is a national tragedy and a scandal against our common humanity,” Ugorji said.

The CBCN also expressed deep sorrow over the devastating floods in Mokwa, Niger State, which caused massive displacement and loss of life.

While commending initial government relief efforts, the bishops called for immediate coordinated humanitarian aid, long-term rehabilitation for affected communities and preventive measures to mitigate future disasters.

“To the bereaved, displaced and wounded, we extend our deepest sympathy and spiritual solidarity. May Christ’s mercy bring rest to the departed and comfort to those who suffer,” the bishops said.

The bishops urged authorities to move beyond rhetoric and implement sustained security strategies to prevent further killings.

They also called for stronger disaster preparedness to protect vulnerable Nigerians from natural calamities.
