Michael Carrick faces mounting pressure to revive Manchester United’s season when they host Italian side Roma in the Champions League tonight, with the struggling Premier League club desperate to end a nine-match winless run.
United’s disappointing results have intensified speculation over Carrick’s future, with reports suggesting that the former England midfielder could have just two matches to convince the club’s hierarchy ahead of a possible review during the November international break.
Their Champions League meeting with Roma at Old Trafford comes after another frustrating afternoon against Chelsea, where United suffered a 2-0 defeat at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.
Despite producing an improved first-half performance, Carrick’s side unravelled after the break, with Lisandro Martinez sent off as United suffered their third consecutive defeat and fourth in their last five matches.
The result extended their winless sequence in all competitions to nine games, their worst run since the 1988/89 season, raising further concerns about the club’s declining fortunes.
United have not won since their last Champions League home appearance, when they thrashed Azerbaijani debutants Sabah FK 4-0 on September 10.
Their European campaign has also suffered setbacks following defeats away to Atletico Madrid and Como, leaving them 21st in the league phase standings and under pressure to revive their qualification hopes.
However, Roma arrive at Old Trafford in considerably better form despite dealing with a lengthy injury list that has left head coach Gian Piero Gasperini with only 17 available outfield players for the trip.
The Italian side occupy third position in Serie A, four points behind leaders Inter Milan after 10 matches, having won four of their last five games across all competitions.
Their latest performance was particularly impressive, as they demolished struggling Udinese 5-2 on Saturday to maintain their momentum.
Roma have also enjoyed encouraging results in Europe, recording a convincing 4-0 victory over Slovan Bratislava in their last Champions League outing.
They previously lost to Real Madrid in a seven-goal thriller and drew against Fenerbahce, leaving them 15th in the league phase table.
Despite their injury concerns, Gasperini’s men will travel to Manchester with confidence, knowing that United’s defensive instability and poor run of results present significant challenges for the hosts.
For Carrick, the encounter offers an opportunity to restore confidence, ease the growing pressure surrounding his position and give United’s European campaign fresh impetus.
The former United midfielder will also hope to draw inspiration from the club’s memorable Champions League history against Roma.
In 2007, Carrick scored twice as Manchester United demolished the Italian side 7-1 at Old Trafford in the quarter-finals, producing one of the most memorable European nights in the club’s history.
Nearly two decades later, he will be hoping for another memorable performance against the same opponents, although the immediate priority is far more pressing: ending United’s winless run and keeping their Champions League ambitions alive.
