Galeno scored in stoppage time to secure a 1-0 win for Porto against wasteful Arsenal in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie on Wednesday night.

The Brazilian winger took a few touches to set himself before curling a wonderful finish into the net, past the despairing full-stretch dive of David Raya at the Estadio do Dragao.

The Portuguese hosts saw little of the ball in the early stages but should have opened the scoring in 21st minute when Galeno volleyed against the post before firing a close-range rebound wide.

Arsenal struggled to create clear-cut chances but went close through William Saliba’s header from Bukayo Saka’s right-wing corner.

The pattern continued in the second half with Declan Rice producing a brilliant block to deny Evanilson and Gabriel nodding a last-gasp header wide.

It looked like both sides would cancel each other out but Galeno had other ideas as he curled in a 25-yard effort four minutes into added time to snare the first-leg advantage.

Arsenal will welcome Porto to the Emirates in just under three weeks with their UEFA Champions League fate hanging in the balance after Wenderson Galeno scored a sensational stoppage-time winner.

The last time Arsenal got past the Last 16 of the UCL was in 2010 when they overcame FC Porto 6-2 on aggregate.

This is their first appearance at this stage in six years and Mikel Arteta and Co will still be confident they can overcome this late setback.
